South Baltimore Strength and Conditioning (SBSC) realizes that training and education play a big part in providing our clients with the most highly educated and experienced coaching staff in the area.
We feel that continuing to grow in this craft involves learning from the best minds in the business, and we put our money where our mouth is by sending our coaches to several seminars each year. These seminars range from lifting technique to programming, life-coaching to nutrition, and we feel each and every one has helped us become the best coaches we can be.

Sean is the co-owner and Director of Operations at SBSC. Sean is a devoted husband, a new father, and a lifelong athlete. Sean has been in the trenches coaching athletes since his collegiate rowing days. His love of helping others to refine technique for efficiency and effectiveness started when he coached for several local high school rowing teams in 2002 — eventually going on to coach two National Championship Collegiate Division 1 boats. That technical pursuit carried him to coach and compete in Crossfit, Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Endurance racing in the late 2000s through to present day.
Sean’s passion is helping others find their place in the world of fitness, through refining and applying various frameworks focused on: Fitness Training, Nutrition, and Lifestyle. He also continues to enjoy exploring his own fitness, finding new ways to challenge himself as he transitions to a Master’s Athlete.
Sean has completed all OPEX CCP Level 1 Courses, is a Crossfit Level 1 Trainer, a USAW Level 1 Sport Performance Coach, USA Track and Field Level 1 Coach, and has completed: Crossfit Gymnastics, Mobility, Endurance, and Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength Seminar.
Troy Venuto is the founder, co-owner, Head Coach and On Site Manager of SBSC. Although he was involved in athletics for most of his life, Troy was never truly on the path to realizing his athletic potential until being introduced to CrossFit in 2007. As a former desk-jockey engineer, he understands the difficulty of prioritizing fitness in a fast-paced work and life environment. Always seeking to improve his understanding of the cogs and gears behind the machine, he found OPEX in 2011, which not only taught him the importance of individual workout design and assessment, but also gave him the tools to do it.
He founded South Baltimore Strength & Conditioning in 2008 with the intention of helping people find their own hidden athlete, and has the strong belief that anyone can accomplish anything they set their mind to. Since then, Troy has been lucky to work hands-on with athletes of every level on a daily basis. Although he values his day-to-day hands-on experience as much as any athletic accolade or certification, he has competed in Powerlifting, Weightlifting, and CrossFit, winning the MD State championship in Powerlifting (220 class, 2012). He is a CrossFit L1 Certificate holder, has attended and coached the USAW L1 seminar, and has completed all Level 1 OPEX CCP modules.
Andrew Vassallo has always had the drive to better himself through fitness. Andrew, a native of Philadelphia, moved to Baltimore in 2012 with his wife Kaeley to pursue their teaching careers. That same year, looking for a medium to further develop himself as an athlete, Andrew joined South Baltimore Strength & Conditioning. Immediately he fell in love with the supporting coaches and the motivation he found within to continue to grow and push himself day in and day out.
As a teacher, Andrew has always had a passion for helping others grow as well, so after three years in the sport of fitness, he enrolled in the SBSC Instructor Training Program with the goal of becoming a member of the coaching staff. He succeeded with flying colors, and is a welcome addition to our team. Andrew currently holds his CrossFit Level 1 certification and continues to look for ways to learn and grow as a coach, athlete, and as a person.
Holly Arnold has always had a passion for athletics. This led her to play sports throughout elementary and high school, and to running marathons after college. After a few injuries, Holly wanted to learn more about fitness and how to improve herself and discovered CrossFit. After training for a few years, Holly’s love of learning led her to pursue coaching education in the form of CrossFit Level 1 and USA Weightlifting Level 1. Holly also attended Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength seminar.

Troy Venuto has been involved in fitness and athletics for much of his life, but when he found CrossFit in late 2007, something clicked. It wasn’t long before he attended a certification seminar and began to seriously consider the idea of coaching others. With little more than a few weights and a bit of passion, he decided to set up shop in a park in Baltimore, hosting once-weekly free workouts to whoever wanted to show up. He hosted these workouts for a full year, and never found himself without willing participants. It was here he met Sean, his future business partner, and many other future friends and clients. After a year of testing the waters, he finally decided the time was right to get a space and make it official.
SBSC’s first location was a 1600 sq ft industrial space, and what it lacked in size it made up for in character! Although quirky and small, the space allowed a daily workout schedule, and it was here where Troy earned his coaching chops. However, it still wasn’t his full-time job, and although that allowed every penny to be reinvested into the business, it was definitely preventing further growth. That’s where Sean reenters the picture. After two years in the original space, Sean and Troy decided to partner up and really make a go of it. In 2011, they moved to the current 6400 sq ft Russell St location, and Sean made the switch to coaching full time. Not long after, Troy began to coach full time as well.
Far from being the end of the story, the move to the current facility and full-time coaching was merely the beginning of the evolution. Sean and Troy share the same values of constant curiosity, experimentation, and education, and sought out the best mentors in the industry. Instrumental in the process was James FitzGerald, founder of OPEX and former CrossFit Games champion, who introduced us to the concept of individualized programming for our clients. Recognizing the unique needs of the clients they worked with, and having the tools available to tailor workouts specifically for those needs, led Sean and Troy to make the On Site program their core offering.
At this point, thousands of clients have come through the doors at SBSC, and Sean and Troy look forward to coaching a thousand more. Each and every one of those clients has led them to learn and remain curious, and use the knowledge gained to maximize their efficacy as coaches.
